A Modern Luddite
Eliza McIlwaine
In 1812, UK textile workers united, calling themselves ‘Luddites’, rioting against the unethical introduction of machinery that threatened their livelihoods and craftsmanship.
In 2026 we face a second wave of Industrialisation in the form of AI, which threatens us similarly, putting careers, world climate and human welfare at risk. This leaflet series reimagines Luddite ethics to question AI’s moral limits, using the language of textile craft to weave past resistance into present reflection.
